The CEREAL consortium comprises 8 leading groups in the research areas of food quality, food safety, chemical engineering and nanotechnology. The aim of the Consortium is to achieve breakthrough results for the Fruit & Vegetable sector through improved resource efficiency approaches and oriented to provide high quality fresh-products. All partners are responsible for the coordination of EU funded health research projects. This strong EU research connection is crucial for the proposed project plan, since it gives the consortium the possibility to work in close contact with the actual performers of health research

UNIVERSITY OF ALMERIA (UAL)The University of Almería (UAL) is a research-education oriented public university with 30 degrees available and 681 professors. More than 12000 students, 30 departments (125 research groups) devoted to research and training. The UAL is placed in one of the most important agricultural areas of Europe with more than 30.000 ha of greenhouses and a production of 2.4 Million Tm per year of vegetables. Agronomic and agricultural research is the main issue of UAL. The Pesticide Residue Research Group (PRRG) founded in 1995 has a long experience in food contamination with more than 20 research contracts and more than 10 EU and national founded projects in the last 5 years. PRRG is the European Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Pesticide Residues in Fruits and Vegetables from 2006. Relevant scientific activities comprised more than 250 scientific papers, the development of European Proficiency Tests for pesticides, harmonisation of European Quality Control Guidelines, or organization of international meetings. EURL is accredited by the Spanish Accreditation System ENAC according to the ΕΝ ISO/IEC 17025:2005. The Laboratory is completely equipped with the specialized instrumentation required for the project, for the chemical and microbiological evaluation. For instance, mass spectrometry instrumentation for quantification, screening or structural identification (high resolution, mass accuracy): LC-QqQ-MS, LC-QTRAP-MS, LC-TOF-MS, LC-QTOF-MS/MS, Quadrupole Orbitrap LC-MS/MS, GC-QqQ-MS, GC-QTOF-MS. UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ (UAH)The University of Alcalá is a research-education oriented public university. Founded in 1499 it's one of the oldest institutions of its kind. It has currently 36 degrees available, counting with 1822 professors, more than 28000 students, 43 departments devoted to research and training that offer 47 master degrees and 37 doctorate programs. The Department of Chemical Engineering is leading an active research related to the sustainable management of water. Drinking water treatment technologies, water treatment for water reuse scenarios, biological and physical-chemical processes, membrane technology, toxicological studies, elimination of odors and hazardous substances and management of reclaimed water are the primary topics covered. The Laboratory is equipped or with access to all facilities necessary for the implementation of project. NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR AGRICULTUTAL AND FOOD RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY (INIA)The National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA) is a Public Research Organisation (OPI) of the State Secretariat of Research, Development and Innovation of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. It''s the only public research organisation of the National State Administration exclusively dedicated to agrifood and forestry research. INIA''s mission, in coordination with the equivalent institutions of the Autonomous Regions is to contribute to continuous and sustainable progress through development of environmentally friendly technologies. Its priority objectives are to satisfy the new research demands on agricultural, livestock and forestry production, mitigate the effects of global change and contribute to food safety. The Department of Environment is organized in five main research areas: agronomy, depuration and agricultural use of animal manure and urban wastes, endocrine disruption and toxicity of contaminants, ecotoxicology and analytical chemistry. For analytical issues, the Department of Environment is equipped with the instrumentation required for the quantitative analysis of chemical residues using both gas and liquid chromatography: GC-MS, GC-QqQ-MS and LC-QqQ-MS.
CONSIGLIO NAZIONALE DELLE RICERCHE (CNR)The ICTP is one of the Institutions of the Italian National Council of Research. The main ICTP research activities are: Polymer design and synthesis of innovative and high performance polymeric systems for the eco-sustainable development and structure-properties relationships of polymeric based material and nanomaterials. The high number of collaborations with international research groups and the effective networking in many National and International funded projects qualifies the ICTP as a powerful coordinator/partner. The ICTP is fully equipped for studying the structure-properties processing relationship of polymer based materials. FRAUNHOFER (IVV)The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the leading organization for applied research in Europe, undertaking contract research on behalf of industry, the service sector and the government. Within the framework of the EU''s technology programs, the IVV is actively involved in industrial consortia, which seek to improve the competitiveness of the European industry. At present, the IVV maintains about 80 research units, including 60 research institutes, at 40 different locations in Germany. An annual turnover of about 2.0 billion € is generated in contract research. IVV develops products and processes primarily in the area of food development, food quality, food safety, functional materials, development food packages and functional packaging material. The determination and prevention of food quality changes during the whole food supply chain are competences of the Department "Retention of Food Quality". The enhancement of food quality and safety of fresh produce is topic in the projects SAFEFRESH, NEXTGENPACK and FRESHCOAT. Existing equipment infrastructure in the Microbial and Pathogen Laboratories are: 4 Class II Pathogen Labs equipped with 6 Class II biosafety cabinets, GEN III OmniLog ID System, ChemScan RDI Rapid Microbiology Solid Phase Laser Scanning Cytometer, Flow Cytometer; light microscopes (Stereomicroscope, fluorescence microscope), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (EDX/RMA) and cryo-preparation, ELISA.

RWTH is SUSFOOD Full Proposal CEREAL 50 of 83 member of the alliance IDEA League of 5 leading universities of technology in Europe (Imperial College London, Delft University of Technology and ETH Zürich). The Department of Chemical Process Engineering (AVT-CVT) is one of the leading chemical engineering research facilities in Germany and hosts one cluster of the "Excellence Initiative". More than 30 years of experience in membrane research on porous and dense membrane types, hybrid membrane processes such as MBRs and adsorption combined with nanofiltration to electrodialysis and gas permeation. AVT-CVT has an impressive record of coordination and participation in EU projects: AQUAREC, RECLAIM WATER, MBR-TRAIN, TECHNEAU and EUROMBRA. In the field of nanotechnology for water, is involved in NANO4WATER cluster: NewED, NAMETECH, WATER4INDIA. AVT-CVT has a laboratory equipment pool for new generation membrane research, such as OSMO inspectors, lab-scale pilot plants, LC-MS, GC, porometers, surface analysis, spinneret for hollow fiber membrane fabrication. The cooperation with the institute DWI (Interactive Materials Research) enables CEREAL other important technical opportunities, particularly for the characterization of membrane materials.
LAPPEENRANTA UNIVERSITY (LUT)Lappeenranta University of Technology has several laboratory/bench/pilot scale membrane filters from 10 cm2 membrane area up to 45 m2. Both ceramic and polymeric membranes can be studied in these filters. In addition, researchers of LUT have developed pulsed corona discharged (PCD) oxidation process which is applied in the project to reduce the oxidation costs. Two PCD equipment are available, one has volume about 10 L and another can treat about 20 L batches. Therefore, LUT resources for the applied project are in very good level. In addition, LUT has facilities to characterize membrane''s streaming potential (also from modules) hydrophilicity and surface chemistry (FTIR, Raman, CSLM, AFM). These will help to understand e.g. fouling and cleaning phenomena and to optimize processes.
LULEA UNIVERSITY (LTU)Luleå University of Technology is the first university of technology in Sweden specialising in engineering. LTU has as priority, the development of user-motivated applied research, although basic and fundamental research has always served as base for our applied research. LTU have 14000 students, 1400 employees and 150 professors. 4 campuses and 54 research topics in the faculty engineering. The turnover for the university is approximately 1,3 billion SEK of which 0.61 billion SEK is for research and postgraduate education. In the Division of Materials Science, the existing laboratory facilities for nanocellulose and nanochitin processing and composite processing are accessible for the project.

The structural characterization lab includes different microscopes, such as scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. Equipments for mechanical testing, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, rheology properties, or moisture analyser. Chemical Technology comprises equipment for preparation, characterization and testing membranes.
